Hand watering gives bonsai growers control over where water lands and how much each tree receives. Bonsai pots vary in depth, soil composition, exposure and root mass, so they rarely dry at exactly the same rate. A small watering can is practical for indoor bonsai, recently repotted trees, shohin and other individual containers that deserve closer attention than a broad sprinkler zone. Water slowly enough that the mix absorbs moisture rather than washing over the rim; repeat as needed until water drains from the bottom, then let the pot drain freely.
