Choose bonsai tools by the work in front of you: selecting shoots, wiring branches, preparing substrate or watering a small container. The right size and material depend on the tree and your technique. Check individual listings for verified dimensions, materials and included pieces.
Pruning scissors and cutters
Fine scissors help reach selected shoots in a dense canopy. Compare our 180 mm scissors with the 200 mm version for reach and comfort. Keep blades clean and use them on growth they can cut comfortably. Thick branches, roots and fine foliage can call for different tools; forcing a light pair of scissors through hard wood may damage the edge.
Aluminum training wire
Training wire supports a branch while you guide its shape. Our Tools & Wire assortment includes anodized aluminum rolls and sets in different listed diameters. Select enough holding strength for the branch without assuming the thickest wire is always best. Apply carefully and check the branch as it grows so the wire does not bite into the bark. Remove it when it begins to mark the branch rather than letting it grow in.
Preparing substrate and repotting
A soil sifter separates particle sizes when preparing a granular mix. Bonsai substrate needs to balance drainage, airflow and moisture retention; species, pot depth, climate and watering habits all matter. Browse Soil & Supplies for the currently stocked sifter and growing supplies. For pot sizing and drainage questions, read our Bonsai Pot Buying Guide.
Watering supplies
A watering can, wand or water breaker lets you direct water around pots on a bench. A timer or drip system may suit a grouped growing setup, but individual bonsai pots can dry at different rates. Observe the substrate in each container and test the actual spray or emitter placement rather than assuming one schedule fits every tree. See all bonsai tools and accessories.
Frequently asked questions
What should I buy first?
Start with the task you perform regularly. A suitable pair of scissors and a watering tool may be more useful than a large kit if you do not yet need every included piece.
Can one pair of scissors handle every pruning cut?
No. Check what the tool is designed to cut and use a more appropriate cutter for thick woody branches or roots in gritty soil.
When should I remove training wire?
Inspect branches frequently as they grow and remove wire before it leaves deep marks. The timing depends on the tree and growth rate.
